auDA’s proposed \u2018Recommendation 2\u2019 would remove this pathway and instead require the domain to match or be an acronym of the registrant’s registered name, or match an Australian trade mark, among the remaining eligibility options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domain industry professionals and business owners are pushing back against this proposed change, calling it an unnecessary cost and administrative burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These changes are not yet in force, and auDA is now preparing a proposed implementation plan. They will publish draft changes to the Licensing Rules and an explanatory guide for further public consultation before approving anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your business already owns a .com.au or .net.au domain that doesn’t match your registered business name or trade mark, this is worth watching. Don’t assume you need to change your domain today, but do keep track of the implementation process and any future announcements from auDA<\/p>\n\n\n\n
