Europe’s largest domain marketplace is currently being sold by its parent company, IONOS, which has classified the Sedo business line as a discontinued service in their operational and financial reporting, and as of today, nobody outside the deal room knows who’s buying it or what happens next for the people who use it.

This isn’t rumor or speculation. It’s coming directly from IONOS Group SE’s own investor filings.

What Actually Happened

Sedo has been owned by IONOS (part of the German internet group United Internet) for years, operating as IONOS’s AdTech business segment. In the last quarter of 2025, IONOS’s management board decided to put Sedo up for sale, choosing to focus the company’s resources entirely on its core hosting and cloud businesses instead.

The stated reasoning, from IONOS itself, was straightforward: the AdTech business needed more dedicated management attention than IONOS felt it could sustainably provide as a side operation, at a time when the segment was undergoing real structural change.

That structural change is the harder part of this story, and it’s worth considering the impact.

The Parking Collapse Behind the Sale

Sedo’s business has really been two very different things bundled under one name: a domain marketplace with a large, established network of buyers and sellers, and a domain parking/ad-monetization operation that, for years, generated much of the company’s revenue.

That second half of the business has been through a rough stretch. Sedo’s ad-monetization revenue reportedly fell 66% in the third quarter of 2025 alone, largely tied to Google’s decision to remove parked domains from its Search Partner Network, a change that took full effect in February 2026 and, by most accounts, isn’t coming back.

The bulk of Sedo’s domain revenues actually came from Domain Arbitrage clients, who would buy traffic from other locations, such as Meta and send that traffic to parked domains in the hope that Google Ads would pay more than the cost of the traffic paid to Meta. This was a billion-dollar industry, all shut down by Google when they shut down their AFD (AdSense for Domains) feeds.

For a lot of long-time domain investors, that wasn’t just a line item on someone else’s balance sheet. It was income they’d built into their own portfolio’s economics, sometimes for years, disappearing in a matter of months. If that’s been your experience, it’s a genuinely difficult adjustment, and you’re far from alone in feeling it.

Alongside the sale process, Sedo also ended its integration partnership with Atom.com in late 2025, which pulled Atom’s listings out of Sedo’s cross-network feeds, another sign of a platform going through real change while the ownership question remains unresolved.

Earlier this year, Sedo also brought in a new CEO to lead the company through the sale process, replacing the executive who’d run it since 2020.

What’s Next?

IONOS has said it’s aiming to close a sale of Sedo by the third quarter of 2026. As of now, no buyer has been publicly confirmed. Industry analysts have pointed out that valuing Sedo is genuinely complicated, because a buyer is really being asked to price two different assets at once: a marketplace with real, durable network effects (Sedo still lists more than 22 million domains according to their site, and remains one of the largest marketplaces in the world alongside GoDaddy’s Afternic), and a monetization business that’s rebuilding from a much lower base than it operated at even a year ago.

What is unknown is how many of the 22 million domains are still active or even owned by their clients. Our own account list includes all of the domains we added over the years, and the real number is a fraction of that, so if that is the case for our own account, it is likely the same for many others. So what exactly are you getting? According to DNS logs, the number may actually be closer to 1 million and not 22 million.

None of that tells us who ends up owning Sedo, or what they’ll choose to change. It might be smooth. It might not be. That uncertainty is simply the reality of any platform mid-acquisition, and it’s the same pattern the domain aftermarket has seen before, with Uniregistry absorbed into GoDaddy’s ecosystem, and Dan.com shut down entirely and folded into Afternic in 2025.

What if Your Domains are Listed with Sedo?

If you’re a Sedo user, there’s no need to panic, and there’s genuinely nothing wrong with waiting to see who the buyer turns out to be before making any decisions. But it’s a reasonable moment to ask a few practical questions:

What would a change of ownership mean for your commission rate?

How would this affect your brokerage relationships?

Will domain sale payouts be delayed?

Are your listings sitting on one platform, or spread across a few?

For what it’s worth, Above.com isn’t going anywhere and has been independently owned and run by domain investors since 2008, and that isn’t changing. If you’d like a second place for your listings while this plays out, you’re welcome to list on Above.com for free, with a flat 3% commission that isn’t tied to anyone else’s ownership structure.

Whatever happens with Sedo, we hope it lands somewhere that treats the people who built that marketplace, such as buyers, sellers, and the many investors who leaned on its parking income for a long time, with respect and integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Sedo being sold?

IONOS, Sedo’s parent company, announced it is selling the business to focus on its core hosting and cloud services. But the reality we believe is that that business unit has seen a huge drop in revenues, making it look bad and removing it helps protect their share price. According to the company’s investor communications, Sedo’s advertising and domain parking business has undergone significant structural changes, prompting IONOS to seek a new owner better positioned to manage and grow the marketplace.

Should I move my domains away from Sedo?

One of the big issues clients do not consider is the staff and support. Is your account manager still there, or have they left or been let go? When over half of the staff are no longer there, it raises serious questions about who is managing client domains.

If you are using Sedo to monetize your domains, then the short answer is YES, you should move your domains to a platform that still monetizes domains.

If you are using Sedo to sell your domains, and if you are happy with their results, then there is no immediate need to move your domains.

Sedo continues to operate as normal while the sale process is underway. Above.com does recommend domain investors use multiple marketplaces to diversify exposure, reduce reliance on a single platform, and maintain flexibility should ownership, commissions, or marketplace policies change in the future.

Smart investors list their domains everywhere. But if your for sale parked domains generate healthy leads, then use the marketplace offering the lowest fees.

How could a change in ownership affect domain investors?

Until a buyer is announced, it’s impossible to know what changes, if any, will be made. Potential areas that could be affected include commission rates, brokerage services, payout processes, domain parking products, and marketplace features. While the transition could be seamless, it’s sensible for investors to stay informed and review their portfolio strategy as more details emerge.

If you have domains listed on Sedo, you’ve probably seen the headlines by now.
