As dot com domains become more scarce, the value of generic domain
names rapidly climbs; many shorter generic domains selling for several
million US dollars.
I often wonder if this value increase will continue at this rate, or if, as new TLD's (top-level domains) are created, the focus on dot com's will decrease.
But, what if domain names become obsolete?

But, what if domain names become obsolete?
There are millions upon millions of websites on the internet. Do you
ever find yourself typing ebay into your browsers search box,
rather than going to the effort of those four extra keystrokes, to add .com
to the end?
Remembering all the websites you use is near impossible. If you're not the kind of person that uses bookmarks, remembering whether the URL ends in .net or .tv can sometime be frustrating.
I believe that, with the constantly-improving search engine technology and the scarcity of domain names, domain names will eventually become unimportant and practically obsolete - Search engines will be the only way to find the website you are looking for.
