November 2009 Archives

domainwatch.gifEffective as of 1 Dec 2009 DomainWatch.com.au the Australian drop domain service that competes with drop.com.au has advised that the New Minimum Bid is going to increase from $20.00 to $50.00 with increments of $10.00

It seems like that they wish to discourage the volume registrations that are most common. Those domains that you will give them a go for their $20  but not $30 and definitely not $50

This price increase is another good reason to use drop.com.au instead, as their minimum bids is $1 plus Registration so $23.10 (inc GST), before this domainwatch minimum bid worked out to be cheaper at $22 (inc GST).

$23.10 or $55.00 not sure about you, but   I know where I will be going for those domains that I am want to take a punt at.

How to estimate traffic

Apart from the revenue, the most important figure related to a domain name is the traffic it gets. Sometimes you just want a rough idea of the traffic of a site to decide whether the domain could be a good buy.

There are a few basic tools which can give you an indication of the traffic:

Register, Registrar, Registrant, Registry.. What does it all mean?

These are terms you've probably heard used, when talking about domains. But what do they mean? What's the difference? Although they sound similar, they refer to very different things. When talking about domains or reading articles about domains, these terms will often be used, so it is important that you understand what they each mean.

The right tool for the job

When looking to invest in domains, you have to identify keywords which are searched online. Those keywords can then be expanded into domain names.
For instance, if I want to create a portfolio of car related domains, I may look for car.com, usedcar.com, cardealer.com, buycar.com, etc...

Be a Registrar Without Becoming a Registrar

Ever wanted to own your own registrar, but either do not know how, or cannot afford the expense to become accredited with ICANN? Some existing registrars offer what is called a reseller account. This allows you to set up your own domain registration service, without all the hassles or becoming accredited. They will also usually provide you with a customizable management interface for your customers, and sometimes, API (application programming interface) access, so you can create your own interface from scratch.

Misspelt Domain Names

Mispelt Domain Names are growing in popularity, as domainers realize they can capitalize on people misspelling domain names when visiting websites. When typing a domain into the search bar a customer may skip letters, double letters, reverse letters or not know how to spell a certain domain name.  When an address is miss-typed the user may be redirected to the correct site, an advertising site, a completely incorrect site, or no site at all.

Have you defined a strategy ?

Each and any domain name can be worth something. Also, over time, the domains will be worth more as the scarcity will increase: there are more and more people online everyday and less and less available domains.

There are probably two main strategies for you to profit from this increase in value:
